Bylaws regarding removal of election posters

JOHANNESBURG – Political parties that do not remove their campaign posters are set to face fines.

The Local Municipal Elections have come and gone, but there are still a few election posters on street poles in wards, and have yet to be removed.

According to Virgil James of the City of Johannesburg, election posters must be removed 14 days after the election, as indicated by the Outdoor Advertising Bylaws. “However, parties are given an extra seven days by the Speaker of Council.”

This totals 21 days in which the election posters must be removed. “Each party is responsible for the removal of posters in the same way they were put up,” said James.

“The bylaw unit responsible for illegal posters, remove campaign posters and they are stored per party.” If parties do not comply with the removal of posters, they may face a fine ranging from R100 to R1 000 per poster not removed and a fine is issued to the relevant party.

“All parties usually comply with the removal of posters within the specified period, albeit not all of them, so the fines are limited to what was missed,” said James.
