5 local bands to follow

JOHANNESBURG – Supporting local talent is what we do. Find out which five local bands City Buzz likes to keep an eye on…

There’s nothing better than home-grown talent, but finding out when your favourite local bands are playing can be a bit of a trick – unless they’re headlining a concert. So here’s how you can find out when they’ll be getting their groove on.

The Parlotones are one of South Africa’s, or more specifically, one of Jozi’s most well-known bands. While some musicians have yet to branch out to Instagram, the Parlotones love keeping their fans up to date with regular snaps, tweets and even Tumblr posts. You can check out their rehearsals, ask questions and find out when their next gig is.

Mango Groove has been around forever, and they just keep getting better! While they haven’t started snapping away for Instagram, they do share their music to Youtube so that fans can check out their funky, locally-made music videos. Lead singer Claire Johnston is also super active on Twitter, sharing pics of rehearsals, future gigs and the fact that the band is working on a new album. Yay!

“I can be your fairy tale…” is famous and one of the many reasons we love Liquideep. The soul, house duo consists of Ziyon and Ryzor and while they’re a bit shy on social media, they still keep their fans in the know, thanks to a Youtube channel and their website. Their site is trendy, easy to follow and filled with pics of those two handsome faces.

We just love the website for MiCasa! It’s fresh and funky – just like the band. When J’Something isn’t cooking up a storm for charity by taking over Craft in Parkhurst, the band is snapping away for their Instagram account and tweeting like pros! They love interacting with fans and we’re pretty sure the fans don’t mind a bit.

Don’t poKe The Bear is a contemporary folk, rock and blues duo who are breaking their way into the local music scene. They often play live gigs at Ice Cream Sunday, Randlords and the Backyard Pop Up Bar and although they’re still getting the hang of sharing themselves on social media, you can follow the lead singer, Daniel Mcowen, on Instagram and check out their Facebook page to find out where they’ll be. What we love the most is that they’re on the ball with letting people know when their next gig is.
