Proudly African all the way

NEWTOWN - Africa Day Concert brings the house down

Proudly African music, food and fun was the agenda of the day as the Africa Day Concert took place at Newtown Park on 28 May, and it truly was a day to celebrate all things African.

Guests at the event were decked out in their most fabulous traditional wear as they made their way down to the venue with their camp chairs, snacks and drinks and the rest of the family following in tow.

What was more, is that a number of the performers who took to the stage on the night made sure to express their feelings about SABC’s 90 percent quota, with The Soil’s Ntsika Ngxanga noting that other countries give airplay to only two percent of music from outside their borders and so the new quota can only be a positive thing for all Africans.

Organiser of the event, Brad Holmes said, “The main reason for holding this concert every year is because we’re just so passionate about African music and 90 percent of live African music that gets played in the city is performed in Newtown.”

Holmes, who has organised the concert for the past 12 years, brought the best of the best to Newtown Park this year and music lovers from across the country showed their love for their favourite singers and their African culture.

The star-studded line-up included the likes of South African songbird, Zonke, local legend, Oliver Mtukudzi and many more talented performers from the African continent – not to mention the host of local celebrities who turned up at the event to support their fellow entertainers onstage.
