A movie kind of fundraiser

FOURWAYS - Read up on how important Early Childhood Development (ECD) resources are for children.

As Early Childhood Development (ECD) is of core importance, HeronBridge Training and Resource Centre (HTRC) raised funds for their practitioners in a different way.

The centre gave community members an opportunity to watch Eddie the Eagle movie at Movie@Montecasino on 25 May, while raising funds by simply buying a ticket which contributed to the fundraiser.

HTRC is a non-profit organisation which works on educating and upskilling community teachers as well as granting them a qualification with the aim to help enrich the community.

“We are happy with the turnout as the main aim is to help raise funds to buy the necessary resources that the practitioners need for their training. Some of them teach children in the community which is why it is very important that they receive those necessary resources in order to help with their training,” said the centre’s donor liaison officer, Sandi Brown.

The centre focuses on a strong correlation between sustainability and the upliftment of people and communities. Their vision is to equip and empower teachers from disadvantaged communities through education and training. To this end, they have established their training and resource centre to provide teacher training in an equipped environment which enhances the teachers’ teaching experiences and abilities.

“The practitioners come to the centre every Tuesday to do their training and at their workshops they are taught how to make resources for their schools and their teaching programmes,” Brown explained.

Some of the funds raised will also go to a four-year-old boy the centre calls Boy Blue who has Cerebral Palsy and attends an Early Child Development school in Diepsloot. “The boy is in need of a specialised wheelchair that supports his spine which allows him to sit upright. He is also in need of a therapist that needs to be with him at least once a week, the necessary educational and sensory kits as well as a dietitian that will advise his family on the foods he needs to eat,” Brown expressed.
