The magic of music

JOHANNESBURG – Find out which Mozart classic will be taking over the theatre.

Joburg Theatre has partnered with MDN Classics to present Mozart’s The Magic Flute on stage for four shows only at the Mandela Theatre from 18 to 24 May.

Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute is considered to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. It was originally composed and premiered in Vienna, Austria, in 1791 but has remained a classic favourite, and one of the most performed operas in the world, for the past 200 years.

The opera is performed in the form of a German singspiel, a form that includes singing and spoken dialogue. For the production taking place in Braamfontein, the texts will be sung in German, while the spoken pieces have been transformed into a mix of South African languages.

The incredible international cast will include South African tenor Musa Nkuna, (who is currently based in Germany) as Tamino; South African classical singer, Aubrey Lodewyk as Papageno; Germany-based South African soprano, Caroline Nkwe as Pamina; and Polish coloratura soprano, Aleksandra Olczyk as the Queen of the Night. The Three Ladies will be played by Viola Zimmermann, Christine Dammann and Anna Nesyba while Polish bass, Marek Gastecki plays Sarastro; German tenor, Henning Jendritza as Monostatos; and the award-winning Gauteng Choristers will feature in the chorus.

The Magic Flute is a magnificent love story written by Schikaneder and promises to be a highlight for theatregoers.

Performances will run at the Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre from 18 to 24 May at 8pm.

Ticket prices range from R200 to R500.
