Titans clash at top-secret premiere

JOBURG - Shrouded in secrecy, the heavily-anticipated superhero action flick Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice premiered at the Il Grande cinema at Montecasino.

From the agreement guests signed to not reveal spoilers, to the infra-red goggles security donned during the screening to ensure not a second of the film would be captured on a cellphone camera, the film has been kept under lock and key.

Early teasers and trailers gave little away except to rouse the interest of viewers but director Zack Snyder himself spoke in a clip before the screening of the film to implore the audience to refrain from giving away spoilers. Partnering with Shell gave Warner Bros. the ability to bring Batman v Superman to our screens a day before the US release.

With all this mystery around the film, you can be guaranteed some curve-balls and big plot twists.

Snyder’s film follows the events of Man of Steel, where we were first introduced to Superman aka Clarke Kent. Man of Steel was hailed as an edgier look at the Superman origin story and in his new film, Snyder did not shy away from the edge.

This time round, we are introduced to Batman aka Bruce Wayne. Yet, this is an altogether more complex and brooding Batman than we’ve ever seen before. For Batman, with age comes bitterness and his vendetta against Superman – who has come to be hailed by the people of Metropolis as a figure akin to a God – is what sets the plot in motion. The antagonist in this story is Superman’s long-time foe, Lex Luther, in this film re-imagined as a punishing genius, similar to the likes of Steve Jobs. With Jesse Eisenberg playing the sinister Luther, one can’t help but draw comparisons to his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, yet this time with an even more intricate strategy than the creation of Facebook.

For fans of DC Comic’s The Justice League, be assured that you will get a glimpse of the heroes who will come to make up the team of crimefighters, led by Batman and Superman.

The film has just been certified with an age restriction of 13 for violence, and rightly so because, while the fight scenes are beautifully choreographed, the violence can also be jarring for a younger audience.

The film stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg as well as Israeli model-turned-actress, Gal Gadot.
