Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week finds new home

JOBURG - South Africa’s premier fashion spectacular is taking the runway to the iconic Nelson Mandela Square at Sandton City.

In what’s become the perfect fusion between Africa and South Africa’s leading fashion retail space and the continent’s premier fashion event, African Fashion International (AFI) is excited to announce that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg will return to the Nelson Mandela Square this year.

There’s no surprise the much-anticipated fashion extravaganza has made its way to the venue situated at the heart of Johannesburg’s business hub. Sandton City remains the ultimate shopping destination for the fashionably fabulous from across the continent. Nelson Mandela Square, adjacent to Sandton City, is Johannesburg’s prime destination for fine dining, high-fashion and couture and provides access to some of the world’s most iconic and glamorous brands.

“Hosting this iconic event in the heart of bustling Sandton opens up an established platform to new possibilities,” said Sizwe Nzimande, group marketing manager of AFI.

“Our partnership with JHI Retail (Pty) Ltd, who manages the two centres, means that the impact of the event will extend beyond the shows. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg will be the talking point of all who visit the Sandton district, putting this fashion spectacular at the heart of the City’s zeitgeist [sic] for its duration.”

With the main showcase events taking place in Nelson Mandela Square under the watchful protection of South Africa’s favourite president, Madiba, patrons at the exclusive restaurants surrounding the square will be able to snatch a first glimpse of the incoming season’s most exciting trends.

“The Sandton precinct is a rich blend of culture, art and couture, enticing the continent’s cosmopolitan society. The two centres boast more than 400 shops and restaurants between them, offering fashionistas the perfect destination to regroup after each day’s shows,” said Annamarie De Carvalho, centre manager of Nelson Mandela Square and Sandton City.

“Hosting the continent’s premier fashion event is an exciting opportunity to offer our visitors, and we are delighted to partner with AFI over the next two years.”

The new venue will also host AFI next year.

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg’s main event at Sandton City is set to take place from 10 to 12 March.
