Meet the talent behind GoodLuck

JOHANNESBURG – You’ve heard their hits like Hop On, Hop Off and Taking It Easy, and they may just be your favourite tracks, but do you actually know who GoodLuck is?

The funky, electro-swing and dance group hails from Cape Town and is in The City of Gold promoting their latest single, Back in the Day.

Lyricist and vocalist for the group, Juliet Harding, AKA Jules, said, “The song is born out of remembering how life was when you were growing up before any technology was available and before we were so consumed by our phones and our laptops. There was a time where we used to be very free and run around and be adventurous.”

Producer and drummer, Ben Peters added, “The sentiment of it is so powerful! When you’re a child you’ll run around, hands up in the air, going crazy but as an adult, you feel like you’ve got to run like you’re being athletic. And to have lost that sentiment is just tragic because as you grow up, you shouldn’t lose that carefree nature, it shouldn’t be stripped away from you by society, it should be moulded around you and embraced and you should stay happy and not get cold.”

The band made headlines over four years ago with their infectious beats, releasing a number of top 10 singles that made the public, local and international, fall head over heels. However, the pair admits that they shunned the media when they first hit the spotlight.

“We’re not pop stars, we don’t like that vibe. We’re not celebrity types. We’re just people,” explained Peters. Now the group has taken up the challenge of connecting with the public, making the faces behind their incredible music known. And they’ve got a young, fresh face beside them – saxophonist and piano player, Matthew O’Connell. “I’m the better looking one,” he laughed.

“Matthew has been with us for the last five months. He joined quite recently and he’s the third member,” said Harding. The original third member of GoodLuck, Raiven Hansmann, opened a studio and decided to stay in Cape Town. Although O’Connell has only been with the band for a short time, he already has a stack of highlights behind him.

“We played music on a yacht for a few days – definitely one of my highlights. We’ve played in Norway, Amsterdam, Holland, Paris – we went on this train, I’ve never been on such a fast train!” And they’ve just come back from tropical paradise, Bali. Not bad for a newbie.

If their latest single is anything to go by, there’s no doubt that GoodLuck is fast on its way to becoming one of South Africa’s greatest musical talents!
