Comedians to take part in boxing contest

SUNNINGHILL - Stand-up comedian, Glen Bo, will take part in the Comedians' Fighting Contest at Fight Fit Malitia Gym in Sunninghill Village Shopping Centre on 14 November.

“Training for the fighting contest was not easy, you need to change your lifestyle, adopt a healthy lifestyle and train as much as possible,” Bo said.

The fighting contest is in association with Movember Move to get men ‘off the couch’ and to be active.

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as depression in men, prostate cancer and other male cancers. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event and their goal is to “change the face of men’s health”, by encouraging men (whom the charity refers to as “Mo Bros”) to get involved. The foundation’s aim is to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and to ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides annual check-ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle

Bo has been training for the past three months and believes boxing is an art form which also teaches discipline.

He decided to participate in the fighting contest after he was challenged to take on some of the heaviest training under Extreme Fighting Champs, to learn, lose weight and upskill to represent Joburg.

Bo will face Werner Webber, a comedian from Cape Town.

“I just wanted to challenge myself, to show people that if a comedian can train, fight and be healthy, anyone can,” Bo quipped.

There will be eight comedians boxing it out in the ring to raise funds for Movember charity.

The comedians joining the cause, and also some doing stand-up comedy on the evening, include Bo, Warren Robertson, Nic Goliath, Werner Cloete, Simmi Areff, Robby Collins, Hannes Brummer and Vittorio Leonardi, among others.

The evening will feature a fantastic line-up of comedy, live boxing, event demos and will also boast a bar and live music.
