Local band heats up the music industry

JOBURG - With one year of experience under their belts, band members Jamie-Lee Sexton, Mark van Dijk and Danny Helsing, who make up local band The Sextons, are now ready to take over the South African music industry with their new album, Welcome to Forever.

The band members all live in the northern suburbs and were put in touch with each other through mutual friends in the music industry. They all come from different musical backgrounds and formed a band with a sound unlike anything else in South Africa at the moment – and they’re rocking it.

“We struggled to name our sound for the longest time,” explained Van Dijk.

Helsing added, “Well we’ve had to limit ourselves on iTunes to a specific genre, so what we’ve said is sort of folk/rock, but with a bit of soul and jazz.”

Van Dijk quipped, “… And we throw some disco in there too – we’re not scared to play around.

“What I love about the sound is that it’s definitely not pigeon-holed, but because of our different influences individually, through music, it’s made a unique sound. I think the sound is very eclectic. To call it one thing would be an injustice, but what’s nice about it is that you can hear it all on the album.”

The content on their album is described by the band as a 12-year journey of experiences which have been written by Sexton – music that’s bound to pull on the heartstrings.

Although having been in a band for such a short time, they’ve played a number of festivals and farmer’s markets, including the legendary Oppi Koppi festival, but with the release of their first album they are set to headline other music shows.

The band has already had one of their singles break into the Israeli charts, so they’re well on their way to gaining the global recognition that their international sound needs.

In the next few years, they hope to be active in the international music industry and hopefully share a stage with Journey or Imagine Dragons.

The album, Welcome to Forever, is set to hit music stores on 23 October.
