The Visit: Funny and frightening at the same time

JOBURG – Film director M Night Shyamalan goes indie in the funny but frightening film, The Visit.

Unlike his other directorial projects such as The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs, Shyamalan’s The Visit is a low budget indie movie shot documentary style and almost entirely at two locations, as seen in movies such as Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project.

The film documents two siblings’ visit to their estranged grandparents. As part of their visit, the children want to reunite the grandparents with their mother who had a fallout with them when she was younger and had kept them out of her life.

Things get wildly strange for the children during the week of their visit to the grandparents. They notice the behaviour of the grandparents seems to be out of the ordinary and creepy.

Shyamalan maintains his weird and complex style of storytelling as seen in his previous movies. He also leaves his audience with a profound message to never hold on to anger.

This is a good movie to watch if you are a fan of the director and his movie style and wish to see what he has done with this low-budget movie as opposed to his other blockbuster films. It is weirdly funny but scary at the same time and keeps the audience glued to the screen in anticipation of finding out what is wrong with the grandparents.

It might not be as enjoyed by audiences who do not particularly enjoy this documentary style of filmmaking, but seeing how the story unfolds is worth the viewing.

The movie will be released in South African cinemas nationwide on 11 September.
