Claudia Monja, who was born in Cuba, will headline the opening night cast as she plays the entrancing part of Kitri, alongside dashing fellow Cuban, Juan Carlos Osma.
It is the debut for both talented dancers and reportedly a special moment for Monja, who was unable to dance her first Swan Queen in Swan Lake due to an injury.
During the season, Joburg Ballet prima ballerina, Burnise Silvius, will dance alongside Australian guest artist, Aaron Smyth, Randol Figueredo from Cuba and National Ballet of Ecuador guest artist Jonhal Fernandez. The third couple in this talented line-up will be Joburg Ballet principal dancers Shannon Glover and Michael Revie.
Don Quixote is set in Barcelona and tells the story of lively Kitri and her love for Basilio, who is a young, poor barber. However, Kitri’s father has other marriage plans in mind and the comedy unfolds in a spectacular show, culminating in the famous Don Quixote pas de deux and a happy-ever-after ending as all characters dance into the Spanish sunset.
