Children sat elatedly next to nostalgic parents and couples huddled for comfort at the premier of Montecasino’s Classic Drive-In.
The night saw Andrews in her iconic role as Maria in the classic musical movie which was projected from a bakkie onto a blow-up screen to the audience. Drive-ins are theatre complexes which consist of a large outdoor space with parking bays. The movie is projected on a large screen while the audience sits in their cars or outside on chairs.
According to South African History Online, the drive-in complexes soared in popularity during the 60s when South Africans had no access to TV.
Glenn Joseph, Montecasino general manager, highlighted his excitement at providing a new and novel experience for guests to his patrons.
“Our Classic Drive-In nights offer a wholesome night of entertainment that simply can’t be experienced anywhere else in Joburg anymore, and we hope it will bring back memories of good times for our guests.”
The drive-in will be open for the next two weeks, until its final screening on 4 July, and showcases a variety of films throughout its duration.
