Weekend fun to look forward to in Joburg

JOBURG - Take note of some exciting events that will be taking place this weekend and many more that are coming soon.

What’s happening this weekend:

Seven Sounds is for the music lovers and those who enjoy and appreciate a diverse collection of musical genres.

Each line-up showcases seven original artists, creating a sonic landscape both eclectic and unique.

Taking place in the urban park Common Ground, Seven Sounds is the perfect addition to the thriving artistic community which is the Maboneng Precinct.

This time around the line up includes industry heavyweights such as Arno Carstens and Toya Delazy.

Converse will be touring Braamfontein over two weekends in a mobile unit near the popular Neighbourgoods Market.

Make sure to be rocking your favourite Chuck Taylors to get your very own Made By You Sneaker Portrait, compliments of Converse.

Bigger and better than before, since the huge success of HELLO Sandton, Spiced Productions have decided its time that Joburg says HELLO to Jozi, block party style.

Time: 5pm

The Potjie of Hope cook-off is being held to raise funds for and awareness of The Villa of Hope, a home that cares for orphaned and abandoned children.

Time: 10am to 4pm

Odd Generation and Maboneng Artist Collective have collaborated on the latest event for Sneaker4Change S.A and although the first event that was held last year was small, they still managed to collect 20 sneakers. An event is held every six months.

Time: 1pm until late

The Tin Factory – Market Launch (6 – 7 June)

The Tin Factory is the newest market to be launched in Joburg, and aims to showcase and embrace some of South Africa’s finest artisans all under one roof.

This market takes place over two days in Kramerville, and has promised an eclectic ambiance which plays host to upmarket food and beverage vendors.

The venue for the launch is 20 Archimedes Street, Kramerville.

DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival (6 June)

The DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year.

Clarkson, Hammond and May Live (12 – 14 June)

The most anticipated motor event of the year is Clarkson, Hammond and May Live.

This year’s event will not only be made up of the hilarious trio, but will also feature a motorhead guest, Ken Block.

The live show will also feature an Italian Supercar Orchestra – using the glorious noises produced by the classic Lamborghini Miura, the sharply angled Countach, the superb Diablo and Murcielago and furthermore, what’s a Lambo-feast without the current flagship Aventador?

The event will take place at the TicketPro Dome.

ConHill Green Festival (1 – 3 June)

“The generation that destroys the environment is not the generation that pays the price. That is the problem.” – Prof. Wangari Mathai.

The ConHill Green Festival held at Constitution Hill will take place in commemoration of World Environment Week which runs from 1 June to 5.

The City of Johannesburg has also come on board and will be joining ConHill to raise awareness on environmental issues.

 

 

Encounters South African International Documentary Festival (4 – 14 June)

Africa’s leading documentary festival runs from 4-14 June at Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau at the Cinema Nouveau at Rosebank and at The Bioscope in Johannesburg.

This festival features award winning documentaries including the biography of singer Kurt Cobain

EXHIBITIONS

The Ice Age Exhibition (12 June – 8 August)

This 3 000m² exhibition was designed to be respectful of scientific research while also celebrating the delightful, entertaining side of natural evolution.

It includes 45 moving, life-size animals distributed among 12 scenes, as well as 11 animals in an interactive play area.

Literary Crossroads: Masande Ntshanga & SJ Naudé (2 June)

This evening will offer insights into two different literary landscapes and two different approaches how to respond to the world as a writer and intellectual.

A Night With The Stars (27 – 28 June)

The incomparable Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka will be starring alongside the talented Johannesburg Youth Orchestra for two shows only in A Night with the Stars at The Joburg Theatre.

Yvonne will be joined on stage by South African X-Factor winners FOUR who have enjoyed a meteoric rise since their win, the soulful Monde Msutwana, Annemarie Steenkamp and Mzansi Youth Choir to ensure a 2-hour musical experience not to be missed.

Fête De La Musique Joburg (28 June)

It is loosely based on the annual French celebration of music and our South African version of the Fête de la Musique (music festival) aims to host the best of South African and French musical talent.

Completely different from a music festival, the Fête de la Musique is above all a popular and free event, open to any participants (amateur or professional musicians) who want to perform in it.

 

ON STAGE

OneRepublic’s Native Tour (19 June)

OneRepublic have achieved huge international success throughout their career.

Their Native Tour is their largest to date, playing over 185 sold out dates around the world and South African fans are encouraged to get their tickets early to avoid disappointment.

The concert will take place at the Coca Cola Dome in Randburg

 

Comedy Olympics (First Wednesday of each month)

The Comedy Olympics show is a one-of-a-kind open mic event, held at Melrose Arch, to showcase the comedic talents of Joburg’s known and unknown comedians.

New comers and experienced acts try out their best 5 minutes or new material! If you can make them laugh you can take the cash!

The winner of the night is voted by the audience and walks away with a cash prize.
