Acoustic trio ‘shynes’

FOURWAYS- Shyne, an alternative acoustic band from Johannesburg is turning heads in the South African music scene.

The three band members who prefer to be known by their stage names, Simone, Andy and Owl have introduced an alternative and fresh sound. Simone is the lead singer and Andy and Owl play acoustic guitars.

“We all multi-task, Andy and I also sing,” said Owl. Referring to the band’s name Owl added, “We liked the idea of ‘shining’ and being ‘out there’ but thought that adding the ‘Y’ gave the name some mystique.”

The mysteriousness of their name may be contradictory, but it inspires them to make almost magical music, straying from traditional forms.

SHYNE do not limit themselves in genre, they produce and make music form rock, folk, blues and even jazz. According to Owl this targets a broader audience and caters for everybody’s tastes.

Owl added he was inspired by great lyrics and beautiful sound and likes everything from Leonard Cohen to Bob Dylan, to hard rock, to world music and classical. However, he is intrigued by international dance and theatre. Conversely Simone is inspired by nature. “I live with a sense that all has purpose and with this comes great responsibility to express my craft,” she said.

Andy stated his influences were from all genres which he’s snipped little bits of ‘I likes’ out of and there isn’t a particular band or artist that has been his main influence.

Their latest album Meet me at the Edges has just been released and can be accessed on Sound Cloud and iTunes. Owl said as a band they aimed to transform society through their music by raising serious issues such as crime and poverty, but additionally to bring a sense of hope. They will be debuting their album at Junipas in Bryanston on 18 September. The event has been cleverly dubbed, Get your Summer SHYNE on. This talented trio is sure to take the music scene by storm.
