Von Trapps thrill at opening night

MONTECASINO - With an all South African cast, and a proud (even a little loud) audience, how could The Sound of Music fail?

The answer is, it couldn’t. At the opening night of the show young and old came together. For some, to recapture an old favourite, for the rest to experience something they will never forget.

That might just be the magic of the The Sound of Music. It seems to speak to the hearts of any generation.

At the opening night on 29 April, Andre Schwartz as Captain von Trapp and Bethany Dickson as Maria, stole applause during the evening, but the fresh-faced young cast playing the Von Trapp children certainly weren’t forgotten. The 18 children playing six roles in rotation were the stars after the show when a beaming audience lined up to get an autograph from the youngsters.

Since the turn of the 21st century, The Sound of Music has lead to major productions around the world, giving testament to its title as the world’s most popular musical.

The legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein musical boasts a record-breaking 954 performances at the London Palladium where it was seen by more than two million people.

The role of Maria was cast following a 2006 BBC reality television show, How do You Solve a Problem like Maria?
