What’s on this weekend

JOBURG - Don't let the nip in the air keep you holed up at home all weekend.

Here is a selection of events in and around the city to brighten bleak autumn days.

12 April:

Enjoy a morning of good shopping, great food and an electric vibe at Neighbourgoods Market.

The market takes place over two floors of 73 Juta Street, a landmark Joburg building that features a large-scale concrete facade by Edoardo Villa, from 9am.

Wits Art Museum curator Fiona Rankin-Smith will host an adult talkabout of the exhibition Ngezinyawo – Migrant Journeys at 12pm.

The exhibition addresses issues of migrancy and brings together the heritage of many southern African language groups through film, photography, contemporary artworks, artefacts from ethnographic collections, archival documents and interviews.

This weekend is also your last chance to catch Sean Bovim’s Freddie Mercury tribute, Queen at the Ballet, at Joburg Theatre, Loveday Street, Braamfontein.

The white stallions of the South African Lipizzaners will put on a prancing performance at their home base in Kyalami to help raise funds for Cansa’s child cancer unity.

Enjoy this family-friendly day out with the equine beauties at 1 Dahlia Road, Kyalami, from 11am.

This weekend also marks the beginning of the 10-day Nissan Easter Festival at Kyalami Equestrian Park.

The festival will feature equestrian events, family entertainment and a slew of food stalls.

This weekend will see the focus turned on dressage classes, showjumping and the InterAfrica Cup.

Soccer fans will be able to see the mighty Amakhosi (Kaizer Chiefs) up against Matsatsanta (SuperSport United) in the quarter finals of the 2014 Nedbank Cup.

The match will be played at the FNB Stadium, Soweto, at 3pm.

Another quarter-final match will see Mamelodi Sundowns pitted against Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versveld Stadium, Pretoria, at 8pm.

13 April:

Maboneng Precinct’s independent cinema, The Bioscope, will feature a screening of the 1964 classic, Mary Poppins, for its regular Classic Movie Sunday event at 7pm.

Tickets to this tale about a magical nanny will be discounted, and Bioscope Film Society cardholders will be able to get in for free.
