Local muso to support Tori Amos

JOBURG - Multi-talented Durban-born musician Michael Lowman will join Tori Amos on the South African leg of her upcoming world tour.

Amos will play four concerts in South Africa in June, in support of her latest album, Unrepentant Geraldines.

Joburg-based Lowman said he was excited to perform on the same stage as the eight-time Grammy Award nominee.

“It’s incredible to support an artist like Tori Amos,” he said.

“This is a career-defining moment for me. I can’t wait to stand on stage with my guitar and sing my heart out for her fans, the people [who] love her music. Who knows — hopefully they may fall in love with me a little bit too. I’m completely over the moon.”

Lowman’s musical career began at the age of 17, when he learned to play the guitar and started writing songs.

A few years later, he started posting videos of himself on YouTube, and as fate would have it, these videos soon caught the eye of Los Angeles-based Authentik Artists record executive, Scott Austin.

Amos’ South African promoter, Charl van Heyningen, said Austin, who focused on recording emerging artists, was captivated by Lowman’s sound.

“On his own steam, the young singer-songwriter made his way to the States and set about recording his first EP, produced by Mark Needham,” said Van Heyningen.

“The EP earned Lowman a slew of high-profile TV placements, including spots on the Kardashians’ show, Kourtney and Khloe take Miami, but a visa complication resulted in Lowman returning to South Africa, signing with Universal SA [and] recording his debut album, Crayon Boxes, released in September last year.”

The title track was used for a property website advert, and the first single, Your Lovin’ Ain’t Right hit the top three position on 5FM, Jacaranda FM and OFM.

The single Girl Saves Boy gave Lowman his first number one hit when it topped the Jacaranda FM Top 20.

Lowman received a nomination for Best Newcomer at the 2014 MK Awards, and was nominated for Best Adult Contemporary Album at the South African Music Awards.

Catch Amos and Lowman in concert on 26 and 27 June at the Teatro at Montecasino, Montecasino Boulevard, Fourways, at 8pm, and on 29 and 30 June at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
