What’s on this weekend

JOBURG - This week has thrown rain, load shedding and traffic nightmares at Joburgers, but don't let that dampen your weekend.

Here are a few suggestions to make the city your playground.

On 8 March, the regular Saturday morning markets, Neighbourgoods Market and Jozi Food Market, offer visitors artisinal goods and a selection of tasty treats.

For lovers of arts and culture, Joburg Ballet’s production of Coppelia at the Joburg Theatre brings together jealousy, intrigue and a dollop of comedy.

For dance of a different sort, check out Vuyani Dance Theatre’s Four Seasons, a collaboration with Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, at Newtown’s Market Theatre.

This production depicts destruction and deterioration brought about by humans and the earth, as well as the beauty provided by the planet and the hope it gives to generations to come.

Singer-songwriter Roy Gluckman will perform a set at Greenside’s Odd Cafe on 8 March at 7.30pm.

This weekend is also your last chance to catch Trevor Noah live at Montecasino’s Teatro Theatre.

His show It’s My Culture is a laugh-a-minute ride in which no holy cow is spared.

Pieter-Dirk Uys will take to the stage of Sandton’s Auto & General Theatre on the Square in 50 Shades of Bambi, a “sex worker, stripper and grande horizontal”.

The musical, aimed at mature audiences, is recommended for anyone who believes in freedom of expression and the right to choose what is best for them.

Also on 8 March, Midrand Primary School will host its annual Carnival-cum-Family Day from 9am.

The fundraising event will begin with a march, which will be followed by sport activities and games for adults and children.

The funds raised will be used to build a swimming pool for the school.

If a Sunday brunch and browse is more your cup of tea, visit Rosebank’s Finders Keepers Market or Market On Main, at the heart of the trendy Maboneng Precinct, on 9 March.

Also on 9 March, comedian David Kau will be joined by Deep Fried Man, Celeste Ntuli, Loymad, Monique Nortje, Rae Harrison and Thenjiwe Mosley for The Box Stand Up Comedy at Maboneng Precinct’s PopArt Centre, 286 Fox Street, from 7.30pm.
