Miss Earth SA gets ready to take on the world

FOURWAYS - Miss Earth South Africa 2013 will represent the nation at the Miss Earth Pageant in Manila, South East Asia this December.

Ashanti Mbanga (24) met the media, her sponsors and her supporters at Southern Sun Hyde Park on 6 November.

She shared her hopes and dreams for the journey she is about to embark on. “I am a woman with ambition and drive. It is with great pride that I will be representing South Africa.

“I believe I am the ambassador to lead the way. I hope that one day I can affect positive change. I am going to embrace this opportunity with everything I am,” she said.Mbanga also revealed two of the gowns that she will be wearing in the competition. All contestants are required to present an environmentally-friendly dress and attire that reflects they country they come from. For the environmentally-friendly dress, Mbanga chose a dress designed by Redhill School pupil, Susan Bell.

The dress was made from responsibly sourced, sustainable and recycled materials. And Sonwabile Ndamase from Vukani Range Creations designed the national attire which was inspired by Mbanga’s Xhosa heritage.

Mbanga said, “It’s not about beauty, it is about the cause. We must remember to look after our environment. My value is in creating awareness because people look up to me.”

She strives to create a platform to empower young South African women to take on environmental and sustainability issues – and this transport Economics major is ready to share her passion, views and environmental activism with the world.
