As the world honoured Madiba…

SOUTH Africans from all walks of life were united in honouring the legendary Nelson Mandela on his birthday on Thursday.

Most deviated from their usual daily activities and spent 67 minutes doing charity work in the name of the great man.

But not everyone spent Mandela Day improving the lives of those in need in honour of the great man.

There were those who were hard at work ensuring justice was done. Others performed despicable acts, while a modest football club made history in Durban.

The Justice Department announced authorities were working with Interpol to ensure strip club boss Lolly Jackson’s alleged killer was brought back to South Africa to face charges.

George Louka will be extradited to South Africa after losing a final appeal in the Cypriot Supreme Court. He fled South Africa shortly after Jackson was gunned down.

The mood was sombre at Helpmekaar Hoerskool following a deadly family shooting in Brackenhurst which claimed the lives of two pupils.

Paul Nothnagel killed his teenage daughters and wounded his ex-wife before committing suicide early on Mandela Day.

A City of Johannesburg official and two other people accused of illegally selling state land in Lenasia, were preparing for their Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court appearance scheduled for Friday. They allegedly defrauded unsuspecting residents of their money by selling them state-owned land.

Two people died in a light aircraft crash near Lanseria airport, also on Thursday. The crash happened about 1km east of the airport boundary at about 10am.

In the evening of Mandela Day, Premier Soccer League club Amazulu defeated visiting English giants Manchester City 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in a fitting tribute to Madiba.

As for the rest of the Rainbow Nation, learn from Madiba and help make South Africa the great nation it’s destined to be: discover and embrace your passion, never give up, and be tolerant and compassionate to your fellow humans.
