Local football club makes the best of difficult season

FOURWAYS – The Bryanston Warriors Football Club managed to make the best of a season plagued with interruptions thanks to Covid-19 restrictions.

With the season completed, a local football club looks back on a successful year after returning to playing matches due to lower Covid-19 level restrictions.

Gerald Schultz, chairman of the Bryanston Warriors Football Club (BWFC) situated at The King’s College and Preparatory School, described the year as a roller-coaster.
“As BWFC is linked to a school, we had to also adhere to the protocols outlined by the Department of Education. For most of the year we had to play matches without spectators.

“Lockdown was devastating for the country as a whole, but we forget about the little guys that just want to get out onto the pitch and kick a soccer ball, and to not be able to do this for almost a year was heartbreaking for the kids,” he said.

Schultz said the biggest highlight of the season was getting enough players back to enter teams to play in the Rand Central Local Football Association ( RCLFA) league.
“The club had an increase in junior intakes in 2021 and we were able to offer more teams from U13 to U19, with the U19 team coming first in their division.

“Our senior team under a new coaching team also performed very well and finished in third place. Our little league and junior teams also took part in the RCLFA Summer Cup,” he said.
The club also recently hosted a special tournament for U6 to U17 teams after missing out on a lot of game time with the frequent pauses in the season.

Looking to next year, Schultz said the club would celebrate their 10th anniversary after being formed by former Bafana Bafana player Sean Bartlett.
“The club has grown over 250 strong after starting in 2012. We are hoping to host a Decade Cup next year in celebration of our milestone.”
