Local chess player wins Amayanga Yanga Athlete of the Year award at the Gauteng Sports Awards

FOURWAYS– Kajol Naidoo thanked Johannesburg Metro Chess for nominating her for the awards and promised to donate some of the money to community-based organisations helping the needy.


A 10-year-old Fourways-based chess player, Kajol Naidoo, was announced Amayanga Yanga Athlete of the Year at the Gauteng Sports Awards ceremony held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on November 13.

The awards ceremony hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation is aimed at recognising and honouring individuals and teams who have excelled both on and off the field on an annual basis which will culminate to the national awards.

Kajol, who won the U10 girls SA Junior Championship title in July thanked Johannesburg Metro Chess for nominating her for the awards and added, “I am going to donate some of the money to Mother of Peace Orphanage in North Riding Home and Melville Baptist Church Chess for Good social community initiative.”

Kajol said she will continue working with community-based non-profit organisations to teach other youngsters the art of playing chess.
