Gymnast’s training hours pay off

DAINFERN – A young local is ready to represent the province in gymnastics for the sixth time in Centurion in October.

A young Dainfern College gymnast is hoping for a big result in a provincial championship from October 4 to 8 in Centurion.

Grade 7 learner Erin Curtis said she was very proud of herself after hearing that she will be representing Central Gauteng at the National Gymnastics Championships.

Erin has been involved in gymnastics since the age of five with Junxion Gymnastics after seeing her older brother play football at the Junxion Centre Grounds. She was also inspired by her friends to try gymnastics.

Erin participated in the Gauteng Gymnastics Championships over the weekend of September 11–12 and achieved a podium position, placing third overall in the age 12 level six section. “The competition went well, but despite a number of highpoints, I felt that I could have been stronger in some areas. As it has been two years since we last competed due to Covid, I was quite nervous to compete again.

“Overall, I was very proud of myself and happy with my placing as I knew I had tried my best and secured a place in the national competition.”

While Erin will be representing Gauteng five times at Nationals, with her placing first at the Gauteng Championships and fifth overall at Nationals in Cape Town in 2019, she is proud to be representing the province.

“I feel my selection was also proof of the hard work and hours I have put into training and the sacrifices I’ve had to make,” she added.

Gymnastics is not the only sport she is interested in as she also plays hockey and netball for her school. Looking to the future, she said, “I would love to get a placing and medal in level eight or higher at nationals and excel in gymnastics.”
