RIVERSIDE VIEW– The tournament was aimed at encouraging young people from Riverside View to engage in sport activities.

In their effort to keep young people active, Riverside View netball team, Black Jaguars recently hosted a Mandela Dayn netball tournament.

Co-founder and senior team captain, Samukelisiwe Mlambo (17) said the tournament was aimed at encouraging young people in the area to engage in sports activities.

“We hosted this tournament as part of Mandela Day celebration as Black Jaguars, but above that, we wanted to mobilise and encourage young people of Riverside View to take part in a sport code of their choice. We had U13 netball teams, U15 and senior teams participating in a hotly contested tournament.

” The late President Nelson Mandela was known for his deep love and passion for sports. He was a man of sport as a boxer and always encouraged young people to play,” she added.

Mlambo urged government authorities to help Riverside View community build sports facilities.

“Young people find themselves trapped in drugs and substance abuse because they have nothing to do. We don’t have sports facilities, we are using the open space between the buildings because we have no facilities.

“As Black Jaguars, we want the youth to utilise their free time doing sport rather than wrong things. We call upon government authorities to consider helping our community with sports facilities.”
