St Peter’s hockey stars shine
SUNNINGHILL – Two hockey players at St Peter’s College hope to do their best after being named in the district side to represent the province at the end of May.
Two St Peter’s College learners will have the chance to trial and play for their province after being named in the District Nine (D9) hockey team on 8 May.
Grade 8 learner, Jordyn Williams and Grade 12 learner Gabrielle Otto were called up to represent the D9 U14 and U18 teams respectively. While participating in the tournament, they are also trying out for the Southern Gauteng sides.
Gabrielle described feelings of relief and excitement when she was named in the district side due to all the talent in her U18 age group.
“Looking at the U17s who are now playing for U18s especially, I was extremely relieved. I know a lot of my friends are defenders, and had a feeling that my chances were slimmer.”
Both Jordyn and Gabrielle have made the district team previously, but the former said she was only named in the squad and did not get to play because of the Covid-19 outbreak.
“I was really happy because there was a lot of tough competition at the trials. I wasn’t 100 per cent sure I’d make it in, but I’m very happy that I did. The girls who played did amazingly, so it was really tough,” Jordyn told Fourways Review.
Gabrielle currently plays hockey for her school, Beaulieu Hockey Academy, the Northside Griffins and the Dragons Hockey Club. She said even with all the training and playing sessions she does, it has not interfered with her schoolwork.
“Thus far, school hasn’t interfered with hockey that much. We are obviously still trying to get back into the school sports regime, but now I have not had as much hockey as I did in the past.
“Before, I would have six to seven training sessions, but now I have about three or four.
“Academics is the top priority for me.”
Looking to the future, both Gabrielle and Jordyn aspire to take their passion and love for hockey as far as they can, be it developing their skills in the country or overseas.
“I would really love to go as far as I can in hockey. I love the sport a lot, so my goal is to go as far as I can, and get into good sides,” Jordyn said.
Trials for the province are set to take place at the end of May.
