Petersen to join legends for Road Safety World Series

NOORDWYK – Former Protea batsman Alviro Petersen will be taking part in the Road Safety World Series in India.

Christ Church Preparatory school and College’s sports and culture director, former Proteas opening batsman Alviro Petersen, will take part in the upcoming Road Safety World Series T20 cricket competition in India.

Spokesperson for the school Dawn Schmitz said, “The South African team is made up of Jonty Rhodes, Justin Kemp, Rodger Telemachus, Makhaya Ntini and Alviro Petersen, to name but a few. India will be captained by Sachin Tendulkar, West Indies by Brian Lara and England by Kevin Pietersen.”

After a number of years away from the game, Petersen will represent South Africa for three weeks against teams made up of legends from Bangladesh, West Indies, Sri Lanka, England and the host country.

He said, “To be honest, after playing for 20 seasons you appreciate time away from professional sport, however, one always misses the competitiveness of high-class competition.

“I have fond memories of India, it is where I scored a century on Test debut and toured there about four times. I look forward to playing in India again, albeit, as an ‘oldie’.”

Petersen concluded, “I am excited to strap the pads on once more and play in the cricket-loving country of India. I am also looking forward to playing once again with former teammates and competing against some of the best players in the world at their peak.”

The world series was postponed last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but will begin on 5 March this year with South Africa’s first match against Sri Lanka taking place on 8 March.
