Fourways and Dainfern soccer schools unite for Umbro 7v7

FOURWAYS – Two local soccer schools team up for the inaugural Umbro 7v7 tournament.

The Fourways and Dainfern SuperSport United Soccer Schools have teamed up for a six-week tournament against some of Gauteng’s best young teams.

The Northern Suburbs team, as they are called for the tournament, had a bye in the first week but performed admirably at the second leg at a neutral Northcliff venue on 1 March.

The Umbro 7v7 is being played out by SuperSport United Soccer Schools teams from U8 to U12 level, and with each age group playing one 40-minute match on the day, Northern Suburbs won two of the five games.

“I thought the players gave their best in every moment of every game so I cannot fault them on that,” said coach Lawrence Mogotsi.

“But it was the first time a few of our players were playing out on the grass fields [as opposed to the SuperSport United Soccer Schools special field surfaces], and the wet conditions made the grass heavy, but it was like that for all teams.”

Mogotsi added that if his players keep performing well then the results will follow in the remaining four weeks of the tournament.

The soccer schools’ Mike Hughes explained that the move to grass fields, and seven players per team instead of five, for this tournament is to better prepare youngsters for matches they will play at school and club level.

“Our whole purpose is to upskill individual players so when they play at club or school level they have the confidence and ability to do well.”

Hughes boasted that this motive has helped players from the soccer schools be accepted into soccer academy teams in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

The Fourways and Dainfern schools will also look at performing well at the SuperSport United Soccer Schools Super Cup in October and November.
