Golfer Kaiyuree Moodley soars to new heights

BRYANSTON– Golfer Kaiyuree Moodley is taking part in a prestigious international tournament this week.

Dynamite truly comes in small packages, at least that’s the case with 18-year-old golfer, Kaiyuree Moodley from Bryanston.

As an invitee of the prestigious Major Champions Invitational tournament, Moodley will be soaring to new heights.

Handpicked by women’s golfing legend Annika Sörenstam to join Team Annika in the tournament, Moodley is absolutely delighted to be competing.

“The Major Champions Invitational tournament is hosted by golf champion Sir Nick Faldo in Arizona. I’m leaving on 24 January and I couldn’t be happier. The Annika Foundation has asked me to play for the team to bring victory once again,” she said proudly.

The tournament takes place from 25 to 30 January.

Kaiyuree started playing golf at the tender age of four and never looked back.

“We were still staying in Durban at the time, my mom came home with a plastic set of golf clubs from Pick n Pay and you know when I was younger I missed the whole Barbie phase.

“I was strictly into sports and I was just hitting the plastic ball from one end of the house to the other end.”

After relocating to Johannesburg she visited the World of Golf in Woodmead and was made aware from one of the coaching professionals there that she had a natural swing.

“I just went for it and I loved it ever since.”

Having competed in international events in many parts of the world she is thankful for having Golf RSA in her corner.

And she is thankful for her teammates who she said had become family.

“The girls we have now are all striving to break the stereotype that only men play golf. The best advice I can give anyone is to just enjoy it, don’t make it a job just love it.”

On her return to South Africa in February, she intends to practice hard in preparation to take up a scholarship in August at the University of South Carolina in the US.

“One of my goals is to definitely turn pro when I’m over there but I think I will test the waters and see how it goes.”
