Chartwell cheers on the cyclists

CHARTWELL NORTH – As tens of thousands of cyclists rode through the streets of Joburg, Fourways residents came out to the sidelines to show their support.

On 17 November Johannesburg once again geared up for this year’s Discovery 947 Ride Joburg and Chartwell residents took the time to support cyclists from the sidelines.

In Cedar Road, a stretch of road that forms an early part of the 94.7km long race route, residents from inside and around Chartwell North Estates came out throughout the day to watch the race and support their loved ones who were participating in the challenge.

Some, like Vee and Adrian Hofmeyr, were supporting family members – the Hofmeyrs came out as their daughter cycled past. Others showed up for their colleagues – about five Interfile employees, the first of whom arrived and set up at 5am, met up to support a few of their colleagues who were cycling. “Some of our guys are actually riding today,” explained Martin Nangoro, one of the Interfile team. “So we decided to get together and support them. We set up a little gazebo for the day [on the side of Cedar Road] and have stocked up on snacks [including bacon which they cooked on a portable braai] and drinks.”

Dixson Tegha Loasso Mganga and Maxwell Mphande were interested in seeing the bikes go past. “We wanted to watch everyone passing,” Tegha explained. “I myself am a cyclist!”Photo: Robyn Kirk
