‘ Empower young underprivileged active girls in sport ‘

DIEPSLOOT – Youth Alive Sports Project has taken it upon themselves to help girls doing sports in Diepsloot with sanitary towels, sports bras and more to make sports comfortable.

Youth Alive Sports Project (Yasp) recently hosted a girls’ soccer tournament in Diepsloot at Safe-Hub.

The project was started by Johannes Molepo, together with his team Precious Hlaka and Tamlyn Stevens. Molepo explained how it came about, “We identified challenges that a girl child faces when participating in sport.

“Those obstacles force them to even quit participating in various sporting codes of their choice. The main challenges we identified were sanitary towels and sports bras due to socio-economic issues and affordability.”

The tournament was made up of six teams. These teams were from Alexandra, Diepkloof, Meadowlands, Tembisa and Dieplsoot. “Tournaments are structurally designed to support and empower young, underprivileged girls active in sport through donations of sanitary towels and sports bras. Also to promote and raise awareness of girls’ comfortability in sport,” added Molepo.

At the most recent sports event in Diepsloot, the project managed to get a total of 500 sanitary towel packs from Phelang Bonolo Foundation and Ncumisa Pongoma which they gave to the girls once the game was over.

Project team member Precious Hlaka was pleased with the outcome of the event. “We managed to collect more sanitary towels and each and every girl that took part managed to get a pack. The support we got this time around was incredible which shows the impact we have made – that our voices were heard.

“I’m hoping with the next event we go bigger and make an even bigger impact for those active girls.”

Tamlyn Stevens was just as happy and excited for their next event. “We learnt so much from the first tournament we did and even more from this one. We are sure that the next one will be even bigger and better and are excited about it. We are so grateful to everyone who donated.”

Molepo concluded, “Our next event will be in November this year, but more details will be confirmed soon. It will be a fundraising event for the project. There will be donations of sanitary towels, sports bras and old running shoes.”
