Dainfern comes out top at derby

DAINFERN – Dainfern College claim home victory in a Winter Derby Day hockey encounter against Southdowns College.

Dainfern College recently welcomed Southdowns College in a Winter Derby Day hockey match where Dainfern cruised to a comfortable 3–0 win.

The hosts started off brightly, with half-chances near the area from Sahil Bramdhaw and Matthew Gillard. Dainfern kept piling the pressure on the opposition defence, however, their wastefulness in front of the goal saw them wait a bit longer for their opening goal.

With 10 minutes gone on the clock, Gillard finally broke the deadlock for Dainfern following a good passage of play alongside teammate Tim Hughes. With both sides settling into the game, the visitors couldn’t break the Dainfern defence as the score remained 1–0 in favour of the hosts.

Southdowns became fearless on several occasions as they pushed forward searching for an equaliser but Sahil Bramdhaw and his defensive duo were having none of it as they stood firm.

On the other hand, Tim Hughes reverted with a second goal of the match benefiting from Gillard’s long-handled slap pass. Gillard could’ve added the third goal shortly after, however, his shot went wide of the goal and the referee signalled end of play for the first period.

Dainfern kept the same intensity in the second half with the coach introducing new players. Hughes grabbed his second goal of the match scoring from a short corner delivered by Bryce Samigan, making it 3–0.

Substitute Matt Love was presented with a glorious opportunity to further extend the lead for Dainfern but his effort went wide of the goal.

After the game, Dainfern College Hockey coach Julian Hykes said, “I think we were dominant from the word go because we had more chances than they had.

“Overall I’m happy with the performance of the boys.”
