Young Woodmead golfer triumphs

Fourteen-year-old Kiera Floyd has gone on to become the second female winner of the prestigious Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series hosted at the Country Club Johannesburg in Woodmead.

Kiera survived a potentially disastrous two-shot penalty on the 10th hole when she played the wrong ball on the Rocklands course at the country club but managed to come back spectacularly. Despite the setback, Kiera managed to shoot a four-under-par 68.

She joins Jordan Rothman as female winners in the #BridgeJuniorSeries this season, against fields stacked with some of the best junior boy golfers in the country.

Rocklands is a testing course which can show its teeth at any moment, as discovered by rising star Kian Rose who had been cruising to the title at five under after 13 holes, but his challenge was derailed by a double bogey on 14 followed by a quadruple bogey on 16 as he finished fourth on level par 72 – a round which included seven birdies.

Marno Lange, a 12-year-old from Serengeti, continued his dominance in the U13 division winning his third Bridge title of the season having previously reigned supreme in the U13 category at the Waterkloof and State Mines tournaments.

By winning the title, Kiera qualified for the regional finals of the Bridge Junior Series in April where the ultimate prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the Junior North and South Championship at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina in the United States in July this year.

The Bridge Junior Series launched in 2017 with 16 tournaments countrywide featuring U13 and U19 divisions for boys and girls.

Endorsed by Golf RSA, the series is managed by Peter Little of the South African Golf Development Board.
