The Kim Field Academy in Fourways has reason to dance for joy after returning from this year’s New Prague Dance Festival.
Thirteen child dancers and two adult dancers made up the team, which travelled to the capital city of the Czech Republic to take part in the festival from 6 until 14 July. For all their hard work and effort in the hip-hop style of dance, the team was awarded the Flower Bud trophy for the best junior group dance and Participant Prix trophy for best group performance.
Omolemo Sekhethele (10), Lana Knoetze (10) and Rivoningo Gugulethu (11) were also each awarded a trophy at the festival for ‘Best Dancer’, an honour given to the eight top dancers every year.
“They were absolutely amazing,” said Kim Field, principal of the primary school, which provides arts education alongside mainstream schoolwork. “Other countries came up to compliment the children – not only on their dancing, but also their behaviour, friendliness and manners during the trip.

“About 2 000 children from around the world were invited to the competition, eight top picks were chosen for their extraordinary talent, and three of these were from our school,” Field added, referring to Sekhethele, Knoetze and Gugulethu.
“We are very proud of them,” added Zelda Roelofs, management executive for the school. “They work so hard and they were examples to me [during the competition]. When I get tired, I look at how nothing is too tough for them.”
This year was the eighth year in a row that the school had sent a team to the festival and the dancers had practised daily for months in order to be prepared.

“I have been dancing for four years and this is the second time I’ve been chosen as part of the team to go to Prague,” Rivoningo said. “It was very surreal when they called my name for the trophy – it just didn’t feel real.
“I think I was chosen because I’m an honest dancer. This isn’t just a hobby for me, but something that defines me.”
