Beaulieu boasts hockey success

KYALAMI – Beaulieu Hockey Academy sees great improvement as reflected in annual tournament.

They might not have taken first place, but Beaulieu Hockey Academy’s U13 boys showed immense improvement in a tournament marking the end of the season.

The annual Southern Gauteng Hockey Champs of Champs tournament saw many of the best hockey clubs in the province descend on Randburg Hockey Stadium for a day of action on 29 July.

The Kyalami outfit was one of these clubs and featured both a boys and girls team.

While the girls did not progress out of the group stage of the tournament, the boys won two games, drew one and lost one in their pool to reach the third/fourth playoff.

They faced the University of Johannesburg in a tough encounter but managed to pip them 1–0 to finish third.

“We probably could have done better but all-in-all it was a good performance,” said coach, Olebogeng Modise.

“The boys have been good this season and have stepped up to the plate in the important fixtures.”

Modise added that last year the team mainly consisted of U12 players playing at U13 level.

This same group, including two new players, came to the Champs of Champs again this year and improved on their performances, with better scorelines all-round reflecting this.

“Last year we lost against a team 7–1 and this year we lost 3–0 even though that club is traditionally much better than us. When next year comes we can improve even more if we focus on short corners and passing to every player at practice.”
