Fourways High School hosts a scintillating Spar Hockey Challenge

FOURWAYS – Hockey players from 10 teams have a smashing time at Spar Hockey Challenge.

It was a perfect blend of competitiveness and fun at the Spar Hockey Challenge at Fourways High School.

Organisers got it right with short 20-minute matches at the girls’ hockey festival, which saw 10 school and club teams compete throughout the day on 27 May.

In-between matches, players had a chance to interact with their opponents, practise with them in the indoor arena, or even eat boerewors rolls together.

“We have invited the strong schools as well as some development teams that do not normally get to play in big fixtures,” said event organiser, Josie Miella.

“You can see there are no heads down on the field because even when one team is winning easily, the players know it is just 20 minutes and they can jol again.”

She said friendship was the winner on the day.

But there was also pride to play for, and the final between Fourways High School and St Stithians Girls’ College was a blinder.

At full time the score was 1–1, and a regulation penalty shootout afterwards saw the game even at 2–2.

A sudden death penalty shootout followed, and Fourways managed to get one in that the Saints girls could not match, making Fourways the winner.

Les Galloway, founder and national tournament director, said 26 Spar Hockey Challenges would take place around the country this year.

“Some teams have an overload of tournaments during the season while some development teams don’t get to play often, and some have never played on an astro before,” she said,

“We have no entry fee and even pay for transport for some sides so everyone has the opportunity to compete. The games are short so there can sometimes be an upset, or a weak team can score a brilliant goal and get everyone talking.”
