It’s a six for the super league

NORTH RIDING – Action Cricket had its time to shine when 52 area teams participated in a tournament.

Cricket teams from across the province and Zambezi got to show off their skills and have a little fun during the Action Cricket Super League 2018, hosted at the Fourways Action Sports Arena on 22 April.

The all-day event saw 416 players in 52 different teams play against one another almost continuously. Action Cricket is similar to the traditional game, except that matches only last 70 minutes and teams are made up of eight players.

“It helps to think of each area as a district, and that each district has its own team,” explained Leon Kotze, manager at the Fourways arena. “Today is a chance for each district’s team to play against the teams from other districts.

“There are a number of these sorts of tournaments hosted over a two or three month period at different action arenas.”

Kotze added that the results in these inter-arena competitions did not count towards any rankings and instead the day was meant to be a fun and social experience.

“We’ve set up the day so that the whole family can have fun,” said Bianca Meintjes, co-owner of the arena. “While all four [action sports] courts are used for the cricket games, there was food, entertainment and jumping castles set up around the venue.”

Teams ranged in age from U23 all the way up to over 45, and there were men’s, women’s and mixed matches. An estimated 900 people were present during the day.

“The day was a huge success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Meintjes.

“There was a bit of a tie for which team were the best, but the Midrand Action Sports team, Fourways Falcons, Centurion and Sandton all did really well.
