Golf has a beautiful future in SA

DAINFERN – SA's best young golfers give their all for golfing glory at Dainfern College National Championships.

The best young golfers from across South Africa descended on Dainfern Country Club and, after three days of thrilling play, proved the sport is in a good place in our country.

The 18th annual Dainfern College National Championships lived up to its usual standard of high-quality golf, and the cream of the crop was awarded for their skill and determination on 13 March.

Warwick Purchase of St Alban’s College in Pretoria was the star of the show, picking up first place in the individual category after shooting a three-under-par 213.

Shaun Jones of Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge was close on Purchase’s heels though, finishing just two shots behind.

Purchase said his game plan was merely to take it one hole at a time.

“There are a lot of bunkers and different tees at Dainfern so I just focused on my personal play and did not over complicate it,” he said.

To put a cherry on the proverbial cake, Purchase also won the team category with St Alban’s teammate Kyle Campbell.

Their combined 145 was also only two shots ahead of Dainfern College’s twin brothers Miles and Marcus Taylor.

Upon receiving the team trophy, Campbell thanked the players and organisers for making it such a great competition.

Before heading home, Purchase vowed the pair would defend their title come next year.

Dainfern College principal, Matthew Davies said the tournament once again proved a success, attracting incredible golfing talent. “These players are the cream of the crop, and the future of golf in South Africa.

“It shows that even with TV, cell phones and PC games, youngsters can still go outside and lead a healthy lifestyle.”

Davies concluded that the tournament helps get the youngsters’ names out there and acts as a feeder for the international golf circuit.
