Dainfern Lions Football Club are ready to tear up the opposition this year

DAINFERN – A soccer club in Dainfern aims to turn players with potential into stars.

A strong lion is to be feared, and especially if it comes from Dainfern.

The Dainfern Lions Football Club is all about helping young soccer players reach their full potential.

Currently 400 ‘lions’ train at the club from the age of seven upwards. A girls team was also formed last year and can look forward to taking part in a round-robin league with girls teams from other clubs affiliated to the Rand Central Local Football Association.

Lions chairperson, Nic Papas said this year provided another opportunity to develop players into future stars.

“Last year our U12 boys won their league and the U17 boys came second in their league,” he said.

“Most of our teams finished in the top five of their respective leagues and we can build on that this year.”

Papas is also the manager of the Gauteng South African Football Association (Safa) U17 Future Champions team, which comprises some of the best upcoming players in the province.

He also chairs the Area Districts Programme which consists of the best players in the local football association.

So Papas knows a thing or two about identifying talent which is only a good thing for his club in Dainfern.

“We try to develop a passion for the game through our Dainfern Cubs from the age of four, so while they are growing up and progress to the Lions division, the children learn skills and enjoy the game at the same time.”

The Lions are currently playing in pre-season tournaments and friendlies, with the Friendship Cup to look forward to in Trezona Park, Roodepoort, on 21 March.
