Fourways motocross freestyler, Dallan Goldman, doesn’t disappoint

FOURWAYS – Dallan Goldman takes his first King of the Whip trophy.

Few can whip a bike better than freestyle motocross rider, Dallan Goldman.

The Fourways resident proved this when he won the second annual King of the Whip contest at Biker’s Warehouse, North Riding, on 24 February.

The event saw 25 of South Africa’s best motocross and freestyle motocross riders perform tricks and whips (sending the back part of the bike sideways and then straightening it again) in mid-air in front of 3 000 spectators.

And all of this while judges marked them on style, amplitude and variation in the whips they did before landing on the ground up to 23m from the ramp.

Goldman came third at last year’s inaugural event and suffered a crash the day before this event.

Needless to say, the odds were against him.

“I crashed the day before and hurt my arm and knee, and I was late for practice and not sure if I would ride or not,” he said.

“But when I saw the other riders going at it I just wanted to have fun and ride. I was sore so I tried not to overexert myself.”

However, once Goldman got into the groove of it he started doing bigger flips and whips for the crowd’s entertainment.

Before long he won the judges’ approval too, and although he said he was lucky to win, the tricks he did pointed more towards skill and lack of fear on his part.

Goldman said it is not easy doing the whips he and his competitors do.

For him, it took 10 years of jumping, and ‘baby steps’ to reach the level he is on now.
