Annual Otter Estates Lonehill 5km Run/Walk a success

LONEHILL – The 14th annual Otter Estates Lonehill 5km Run/Walk took place on 14 October. Find out more about the event here.

On 14 October, The Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) hosted its annual Otter Estates Lonehill 5km Run/Walk and over 1 000 residents took part.

This event began 14 years ago by Otter Estates of Lonehill to raise funds for Save the Lonehill Dam. The first year attracted just over 200 entrants and has continued to grow each year.

This year, for the first time, the event was hosted at the Crawford College Lonehill grounds where runners began and ended the 5km route.

“The LRA is proud to be associated with and thanks, Otter Estates for their continued support and sponsorship, Crawford College Lonehill for their support in the planning of this event and Fitness from Africa who assisted with the marshaling and God First Church who managed the halfway watering hole,” said Shelley Miller of the LRA.

“Otter Estates and the Lonehill Residents Association would also like to thank MTN, Fiat and Chandlers Attorneys for their generous support and sponsorship,” said Miller.

Funds raised from this event will go to Philile Foundation in Diepsloot and the LRA Envirofund, which helps to cover the costs to maintain the green spaces in Lonehill.

Although the run/walk is not set up like a traditional race, and participants were welcome to complete the route in their own time, that did not stop some runners from challenging themselves. The first man to cross the finish line was Rapula Kekae in a time of 16:42, while the first woman was Robyn Blackwell in 21:10.

In addition, the first 1 000 people to complete the route received a T-shirt and there were goodie bags for all participants, as well as some fantastic spot prizes donated by Otter Estates and some shops from the Lonehill Shopping Mall.

It was fantastic to see ward councillors Candice James and David Foley participating in the race, as well as 16 members from the Lonehill Fire Station who arrived in their big fire engines, sirens blaring. Twelve people from the Douglasdale Police Station also attended the event, as well as members of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum.

“The community spirit was nothing short of awesome. Lonehill you rock!” concluded Miller.
