Unity is key
BRYANSTON – The Central Gauteng golf team plays a round ahead of major tournament.
The Central Gauteng golf team played a round at Bryanston Country Club ahead of the much anticipated inter-provincial tournament.
The region’s eight best amateur golfers will take on 12 other teams from across the country in this year’s tournament, at Bryanston between 17 and 22 September.
Central Gauteng will be favourites after winning three of the last five editions, although they finished fourth at last year’s tournament in Port Alfred.
“We have a good bunch of guys and we are playing at home,” said team manager, Jaco du Plessis on a sunny 6 September. “Our preparation has mainly been about taking individual stars and making them a team – making them gel as a unit and play for each other.”
Team captain, Darin de Smidt agreed that the team was strong this year and the key to success lay in unity.
“We are all good mates and have a good vibe,” he said. “We have clicked well so when the tournament comes we must just take it shot by shot and not get ahead of ourselves.”
Unity did not appear to be a problem during the round. The players come from different backgrounds and up to 25 years of age separate some of them. Yet the format of the round meant players had to work together in teams of two, alternating shots.
Encouragement was offered on many occasions, and while apologies were issued for poor shots, no one was blamed for them. The usual joking and banter that always accompanies a game of golf played itself out too.
“In golf, you meet the most amazing people of different lifestyles and cultures, and this is a very strong team,” said player, David McIntyre.
