Medals galore for Fourways karate kids

FOURWAYS – Local karate practitioners secure good national rankings after winning medals in two major competitions.

The Fourways Martial Arts Academy has returned triumphant from two major karate events in Durban, reaping the rewards of patience and dedication in training.

The Karate South Africa Elite event saw the country’s top karate practitioners compete against each other, and combined with the SA Open Championship held over the same period in mid-July, offered fans a sporting spectacle in KwaZulu-Natal.

More than just pride was on the line, as the events helped set the national karate rankings, which will determine who will compete in future international events.

A total of 33 medals was won by the local club’s 18 competitors in these two competitions.

“Our academy is known as one of the best karate clubs in South Africa as I have been producing athletes on an international and national level since 1997,” said the academy’s owner and instructor, sensei Stef Biagioni, who himself won a gold at each event.

Biagioni hopes the good rankings secured by his members, including the number one national spot in kata earned by his son, Silvio, will see some members selected to represent South Africa in the World Karate Federation (WKF) Junior World Championships in Spain at the end of October.

“We have a good system of coaching at the club, and combined with my experience and success we have kept our members up to pace.”

Biagioni has won the South African Goju-Ryu Championship 10 times in a row, and the Karate South Africa WKF Championship 18 times, as well as other tournaments.
