DAINFERN–There is something new that can be noticed in Dainfern.

Dainfern’s Valley Shopping Centre has a new mixed martial arts gym called Pound for Pound, and owners, Mthobisi Buthelezi and DuHo Kim shared more about the gym.

“The concept behind this gym came about from the experience we’ve had from working at many gyms and Mthobisi has always wanted to own a gym, so I thought I should also be involved in owning a gym,” Kim said.

“I have worked with Mthobisi for close to 18 months now and I just thought in order for us to grow, we need to run our own gym and have a place for ourselves.”

When asked how different their mixed martial arts gym was compared to other martial arts gyms in the neighbourhood, Buthelezi explained that their gym isn’t about money as they’ve had a passion for sport since a tender age. “We grew up fighting and we hope that with this gym we are able to plant a seed of passion for this sport in young and older people who come to this gym,” he said and added that the classes they give focus more on technique and also help their clients achieve their desired goals whether fitness or in the sport.

When asked what people can expect when coming to the gym, Kim said, “They offer private one-on-ones for all those who want to get fit or meet their desired body shape; and group classes, which focus more on the technique of martial arts. We currently have eight trainers who are available to help and train people,” Kim explained.

People from the age of five up to 60 are welcome, as they have classes that meet all ages.

The gym’s current spot is said to be temporary and will eventually move to a bigger space within the shopping centre. “People need to come and try it out and see what we do. Not only are some of us trainers but we are professional fighters as well. We have achieved titles in the matches we have competed in and we are passionate about what we do,” Buthelezi said.

“Our hopes and dreams for our gym is to be as big as Virgin Active but with different styles, such as teaching clients martial arts and boxing.”

The gym is open Monday to Friday from 5am to 7pm and on Saturdays from 7am to 11am. People are welcome to attend any day during these times.
