Fourways powerlifters return triumphant

Four powerlifters and their coach, Joshua Capazorio, from Fourways-based fitness group, Yard Athletic represented South Africa in the World Powerlifting Championships in Killeen, Texas, in the US.

After a very successful competition, Sean Manders, Michelle Letcher, Laura Newman and Maureen Ackerman brought home five medals and seven national and commonwealth records. The lifters only have two years of powerlifting experience.

The results are as follows:

• Sean Manders: Master 1,105kg class, World Powerlifting Champion gold medalist and third best overall Master 1 lifter

• Michelle Letcher: Master 1,57kg class, bronze medalist with a new commonwealth and national deadlift record of 165kg.

• Laura Newman: Open 63kg, 17th place and setting three new South African records in squat, deadlift and total.

• Maureen Ackerman: Master 1, 7th place in the 63kg class.
