Clever Boys stars honoured

JOBURG – Bidvest Wits celebrates the season that was.

Bidvest Wits Football Club ditched their boots and tracksuits for a sophisticated evening as they celebrated the highlights of their season at an awards ceremony.

Despite not winning any silverware this season, the Clever Boys, as they are affectionately known, had a great season after finishing runners-up to champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the Premier Soccer League.

The first award of the evening was the Coach’s Award handed out by Wits coach Gavin Hunt and awarded to player Nazeer Allie who joined Wits at the beginning of the season from Ajax Cape Town.

The second award of the evening was the Chairman’s Award which was handed out by Wits chairman Dr Brian Joffe, with goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs picking up the award.

Wits CEO Jose Ferriera presented the Young Player of the Season award to Phakamani Mahalmbi. The Golden Boot award went to Daine Klate who scored 12 goals with 15 assists in the 2015/16 season. Klate also scored his first hat-trick of his career against Magesi FC in the Nedbank Cup.

The Players’ Player award went to captain Thulani Hlatshwayo and Klate picked up his second award for the evening as Player of the Season.

Although the team did not win any trophies this season, Hunt said he was delighted with the team’s progress. He has already started preparation for the upcoming season, having signed Platinum Stars striker Eleezar Rodgers and Pentjie Zulu of Jomo Cosmos, both on a free transfer.
