Team Jawbone takes on the Absa Cape Epic challenge for Kids Haven

FOURWAYS - Fourways resident, Neil Vlaming and Lonehill resident, Nick Cooke will team up and take on the eight-day mountain bike challenge, the Absa Cape Epic on 20 March to raise money for Kids Haven.

The two have named their team Jawbone 4 Kids Haven and will see them cycle 800km of off-road terrain to raise funds for the haven which provides residential homes for abused and abandoned street children.

Vlaming said, “It became apparent to Cooke and I that if we were going to put that much of our own energy into riding this race, that we ought to have a bigger vision in mind.”

He added that Kids Haven was an organisation that changed the lives of disadvantaged children using a range of programmes, including sport, that successfully helps children to develop their own talents, to have fun and become physically active but also to be disciplined, focused and committed to a team.

“This is our own philosophy behind riding a race like this and connects us to what Kids Haven is doing child by child through soccer, netball, cricket and even dance. Our team wanted to make sure that our race would make a difference,” said Vlaming.

Jawbone 4 Kids Haven has almost raised its target of R150 000 for Kids Haven through sponsors and pledges.

Kids Haven fundraiser Susan Daly thanked Vlaming and Cooke for their extraordinary commitment to changing the lives of children by taking on the cycle challenge. “We are incredibly grateful that Vlaming and Cooke, the two-man team, have been able to think of our children while preparing physically and mentally for a race like this,” she said.

“We know how important sport is in bringing out the best in kids, and we look forward to seeing our boys and girls playing their hearts out in the practices and tournaments which will be made possible through team Jawbone 4 Kids Haven.”

There are 170 children living at Kids Haven and another 150 children living in the community who are directly supported by the organisation.
