Schools invited to register for Danone Nations Cup

JOBURG - Primary schools across the country have been invited to register to become part of the biggest football tournament for 10 and 12-year-olds in the world.

They can do this by registering for the 2016 Danone Nations Cup and become part of the more than 1 500 schools in South Africa that register to participate in the tournament each year.

They will all be vying for the first prize, which is a trip to participate in the world finals with 31 other countries.

Primary schools across the length and breadth of South Africa, including those in Alex, have until 1 March to register, after which, games will begin at cluster level soon after registration closes.

The winners will progress to the regional finals, culminating in the nine provincial winners playing in the national finals to determine the national champion school.

Last year’s national champions, Bree Primary School from Mayfair, Johannesburg, will be in action again this year, and principal Dave Kalicharan will be starting trials to select the team shortly. Bree were champions of the 2009 Danone Nations Cup and have represented the country three times in the finals. Most of the boys in the Bree team that went to Morocco last year have started high school.

“I only have two players that went to Morocco that still qualify for the competition this year and, luckily, one of them was one of the best players last year, goalkeeper, Mncebisi Nguse. He will be joined by midfielder, Vusi Mbuthi,” said Kalicharan.

He will be scouting for players from the school’s U10s and U11s to build a team for the next two years.
