Dainfern Lions Football Club gears up for winter season

DAINFERN - Training for the winter football season starts on 1 February for the Dainfern Lions Football Club at Dainfern Golf Estate.

“This year will see the club go to a different level,” said chairperson of the club, Nic Papas.

“Skills and fitness are the main aims. Once a player is fit, they can apply the skills practised during training and will be confident that the ball will land up in the back of the net.”

Papas added that towards the end of last year, the U6 to U13 age groups took part in a training session with nine coaches from the International Liverpool Academy.

“A total of 140 children from the club were shown the Liverpool way and being a member of the Liverpool Supporters Club Committee in Gauteng, I know that this event will happen again for the club as it has been secured recently from my visit to Liverpool headquarters,” Papas said.

The football club is registered with the Rand Central Football League and play matches on Saturdays and Sundays depending on the age groups. Children are accepted from the ages of four through to the vets aged 55 and above.

Training times range from 4.30pm onwards and practices will take place twice a week for each age group.

Auto & General Insurance sponsors 40 previously disadvantaged members of the club as part of its corporate social investment. The insurance company also assists these members with completing their CVs professionally, arranges interviews for the members and if suitable, have provided them with employment.

Mark White Nissan and Contract Truck and Car Hire sponsor members’ kit.

Soccer talent scouts will also visit the club and it is Papas’ hope that a star will be born from the club.
