Mbesuma’s brace sinks Wits

JOBURG - Colins Mbesuma scored a brace when Mpumalanga Black Aces beat Bidvest Wits 2-1 in a thrilling encounter at the Bidvest Stadium.

Wits were the first to break the deadlock in the 10th minute courtesy of a Thulani Hlatshwayo header who connected brilliantly with a free kick from Dane Klate.

Seven minutes later, Mbesuma levelled matters when Lehlohonolo Nonyane picked out Lebogang Manyama on the wing, who in turn found Nonyane inside the box to pick out the Zambian striker for his 10th goal of the season.

Both teams have been in great form and could be challenging for the title. Wits came into the game on the back of an impressive 3-1 victory over Chippa United.

Aces had their goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters to thank as he denied Klate and Mhlambi two clear-cut chances to make sure that both teams went into halftime level at 1-1.

The home side struggled to find fluency in their play in the second half, and rarely created any clear chances at goal.

It was against the run of play when Aces’ Limbikani Mzava played a wonderful long ball that caught the Wits defence napping, to pick out Mbesuma who fired home the winning goal.

The home side threw everything forward in an attempt to earn a point, but Aces held on to continue their rich vein of form.
